Faithfulness and Scripture
I’ve been re-learning lately how powerful scripture is. Sometimes I don’t think I realize just how powerful it is until God guides me to exactly what I need to hear at a given moment in my life. Lately, I’ve been keeping my nose to the grindstone in applying for jobs. Although it has been a frustrating process to say the least, I think it’s been a good exercise in patience and trust.
The Verses
The following verses are the ones that have had the most impact on me in this season of my life. I find myself repeating them over and over again to myself throughout the day.
- Joshua 1:9 – “This is my command – be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
- Psalm 37:7 – “Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for Him to act.”
- Psalm 37:23-24 – “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.”
- Colossians 1:9 & 11-12 – “We ask God to give you complete knowledge of His will and give you spiritual wisdom and understanding … We also pray that you will be strengthened with all His glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father.”
- Hebrews 13:8-9 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever … Your strength comes from God’s grace.”
Their Significance
I’m not very good at waiting for things I want. My tendency is to attempt to make them happen. However, these verses remind me to trust God’s timing, all the while asking Him to definitively close doors that aren’t meant to be walked through and open the doors that are. In the meantime, my natural inclination is to get discouraged and question God’s goodness and faithfulness; especially when it seems that doors are mainly closing.
However, I need to constantly remind myself of God’s faithfulness and that His character doesn’t change. Last Sunday, the message at church was about trials and hardships. The whole sermon was really great, but here’s a quote from my pastor that struck me as very profound:
“God’s goodness and faithfulness never change. The seasons of your life do.”
Instead of despairing, I need to remind myself of God’s faithfulness in the past and know that He will continue to be faithful to me both now and in the future. This season of my life is just that – a season. Even though it’s a hard one to go through, it doesn’t mean that God is any less faithful. Although I don’t understand the reason for His timing, I know that He is preparing a place of employment for me. In the meantime, instead of bemoaning this season of life, I need to be filled with joy and look for personal growth opportunities through this process. There are plenty to be found I assure you.
I hope these verses are as encouraging to you as they are to me!
Blessings on your home and table, ~Natalie
